Chat from the Chair ~ February 2011
Would you like to become a trustee of the Sandwich Public Library? We have two open seats on our board, and the elections for these positions is on May 10, 2012.
We hope you will think about serving with us.
The nine member Board of Trustees works with the library director to assure that the library has the funding it needs, that the policies governing the library's operations are fair, and that library's strategic directions address the town's evolving needs.
In the next few years, we face many exciting challenges. We need to grow our fundraising capabilities in a way that enables immediate and long term sustainability. We will be working with the Sandwich Charter Review Committee to ensure the library is an effective and efficient town department. We will continue to work with town officials, local business groups, and concerned citizens to achieve a second town library to be located in South Sandwich Village.
How much of a time commitment is this? The board meets formally on the second Tuesday of each month from September through June; working groups meet as needs arise.
Are you qualified? The only legal requirement is that you be a registered voter in the town of Sandwich. Of course, we hope you love the library and want to have a hand in the good work needed to protect and grow it. Do you have any experience fund raising or in non-profit, public, or private development? A knowledge of how libraries work would be helpful. Have you worked on committees or boards before? The best qualification would be a real zeal to become part of a group of people dedicated to keeping our library the best library on Cape Cod!
What are your next steps? To appear on the May town ballot, you need to draw papers from the Clerk's office at the Town Annex, collect fifty signatures from Sandwich registered voters, and submit the papers by March 22, 2012. If you miss that date, you can still run for trustee, but as a write in candidate. You are of course welcome to attend one of our public meetings. You can also reach out me or any of the board's other members individually to learn more.
I hope you'll consider joining us!
