More than a century ago Sophia H. Weston and William H.H. Weston bequeathed to the Town of Sandwich a sum of money to purchase land and erect a library building. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the dedication ofthe Weston Memorial Library Building. To commemorate the proceedings, Eva H. Clark composed the first "History of the Free Public Library" which was read aloud at the dedication ceremony on June 17, 1911. The work concluded with the following:
"With its modern, well-equipped building and the income of about $22,000 for its support, the Sandwich Free Public Library has in store a brilliant future of usefulness."
The Sandwich Public Library has certainly fulfilled this prophecy by serving Sandwich citizens and visitors for over a century. Even 100 years ago the spirit of community support and philanthropy was noted in the dedication program.
"Throughout the library's existence, there has been a splended spirit manifested toward it. The townspeople have united in working for its welfare."
As we enter our second century of service to the community, we invite you to continue the legacy of philanthropic support and community support begun by the Westons. We need your help to keep our beloved library the vital institution it was meant to be.
Our goal is for 100 members to annually contribute $100 to the Second Century Club to ensure that the Sandwich Public Library continues to offer a multitude of services to enrich, entertain and educate you, your family and the community. If you have borrowed a DVD, downloaded an audiobook an ebook or your favorite song; browsed a newspaper or magazine, clapped along during a storyhour sing-a-long, participated in a book discussion group, listened to an author speak about the writing process, used one of our museum passes, researched your family tree, sought medical or career information or just dropped by to pick up a good read, your contribution to the Second Century Club will guarantee our "brilliant future of usefulness".
